After my internship at TBS (Tiputini Biodiversity Station), I have started to build up my knowledge in regard to the environment. Since I am Peru’s #1 fan, I have tried to match my knowledge and relate it to my country. I am proud to say, that after researching about Monsanto and how damaging it is to the environment, I am proud to be Peruvian. Peru is one of the few countries that has said NO to a world leader like Monsanto.
Monsanto is a multinational agrochemical and agricultural biotechnology corporation that follows a mission, as any other business would do: “our commitment to how we do business. It is a declaration that compels us to listen more, to consider our actions and their impact broadly, and to lead responsibly. It helps us to convert our values into actions, and to make clear who we are and what we champion” (Monsanto). Monsanto was funded in 1901 and has grown immensely; it has expanded world wide and has captured the agricultural market in many countries such as the U.S. With more tan 15 different agricultural seeds, Monsanto seeks that populations are growing and the only way to provide enough “quality” food is by agrochemical products such as the seeds they offer, speed, quality and greater production. But is this really what the world needs?
Relationship between Peru and Monsanto:
In my opinion Peru is a world leader. After been chosen as one of the top countries in the “food” section due to it’s impressive quality work and food development, Peru has gotten the attention of one of the world’s most powerful businesses, Monsanto. Impressively, Peru’s government has said: “NO!” to Monsanto, this could bring trouble in the future, but its a great decision. GMO seeds is not what Peru needs since they create a negative effect in the crops natural richness, and the diversification of crops and food. Also, when a customer consumes a product that has been processed through biotechnology, he could have greater health risks like cancer.
Peru is a developing country, that has said no to a world leader. Monsanto only cares about making profit, they don’t care if they destroy a countries economy or abuse farmers, they want to gain profit. With this said, they are not following their mission statement making them a false business that tricks its customers. After knowing that such a big company is so corrupt, I wouldn’t make business with it. As I said, Peru is a developing country, poverty is a major problem in Peru; it is everywhere. GM crops, are expensive, this would limit Peruvian farmers agriculture and many of them would not be able to feed their families or would become greatly in debt due to their lack of education.
I would say that Peru doesn’t need Monsanto. Peru is one of the most diverse countries in the world, having a cost; desert and jungle, where almost any crop can be planted in rich territories. Its climate is perfect to harvest crops, even though there is lack of water in some places, Peru’s level of innovation has increased noticeably over the years and problems are starting to be solved. Not only for future economical purposes but also for leadership and health reasons Peru should keep on saying NO to Monsanto.
